- MRI:
- Magnetic resonance imaging — a scan that uses a strong magnet and radio waves (no X-rays) to make detailed pictures of soft tissues, ligaments, and bone.
- Intercondylar notch:
- The groove or gap between the two rounded ends of the thigh bone, where key knee ligaments normally run.
- Ligament:
- A tough band of tissue that connects bone to bone and helps keep a joint stable.
- Cruciate ligament:
- One of the two crossing ligaments in the center of the knee that help control its stability and movement.
- Joint effusion:
- Extra fluid collecting inside a joint, which can happen after injury or irritation.
- Bone marrow signal:
- How the inside of a bone appears on MRI; a brighter-than-usual area can indicate the marrow is reacting to something, such as stress or injury.
- Meniscus:
- A C-shaped pad of cartilage inside the knee that cushions and stabilizes the joint. There is one on the inner (medial) side and one on the outer (lateral) side.
- Femoral condyle:
- One of the two rounded knobs at the lower end of the thigh bone that form part of the knee joint.
- Subchondral:
- The layer of bone located just beneath the cartilage in a joint.
- Tibial spines:
- Small bony bumps on the top of the shin bone where certain knee structures attach.
- Popliteal recess:
- A pouch at the back of the knee joint where fluid can collect.
- Fat-suppressed images:
- A type of MRI setting that dims the signal from fat so that fluid and abnormal areas stand out more clearly.
